I loved how matalee + kevin (from this post) used vintage books for their reception centerpieces. This is so economical, eco-friendly, and completely charming!

Here are my suggestions on how to make this idea work for you:

1. Budget: to save money, try to find existing books in your home or from your friends and family that you could borrow for the night.

2. Colors: choose books that correspond with your color scheme & don't forget that monochromatic colors can be beautiful.

3. Don't stack too high: depending on the thickness, 2-5 should do just fine.

4. Make sure the title is light hearted: this is a celebration after all!

Also, if you find any books relating to the location of your wedding, this could perfect (see the "Texas" book on Matalee's table).

5. Include other little elements around the books: mini arrangements, tea lights, table numbers, etc.

Last weekend we were lucky enough to attend the wedding of matalee and kevin (our dear, old friends). Their wedding was absolutely beautiful. Held at Mercury Hall in Austin, the theme was sweet vintage.

My favorite elements:

1). the wedding logo (a cute profile of the happy couple that was used on the invitations, programs, food packaging, and all signage around the venue)

2). the delicious cake pops (in chocolate, red velvet, and vanilla)...genius

Hello, destination wedding! I wish I could style travel-themed wedding because the possibilities are endless. The luggage tag escort cards could also double as favors (just type or handwrite the name and table number of each guest and slip it inside). Other travel-savvy favors could include maps and travel guides for the location or mini travel candles. Maps would make amazing backdrops for a fun photo shoot or even table coverings. Being from Texas, I hold the below inspiration board close to my heart. I love the idea of a rustic wedding: laid back, warm texas sunsets, country music, and iced tea.

How to obtain this look:

* wear cowboy boots under your dress (or have your bridesmaids & groomsmen wear them)

* don't be afraid to mix elegant & rustic elements (lace tablecloths with dirt at your feet)

*don't stick to only traditional wedding flowers (try adding succulents, cacti, wildflowers, etc.)

*serve comfort food, I know my family loves BBQ (you could even ask people to contribute home made sweets for an eclectic desert table)

*make the soundtrack consist of old-time bluegrass or classic country (try willie nelson + hank williams)

* choose a un-refined setting, like an old barn, ranch, or a backyard with lots of space for tables and dancing

* mason jars are a perfect element to include for a western wedding (buy them here or get them for free if you eat a lot of jam :) If you want to use them as candle holders, the below image is sweet (with the raffia bow detail). You can also loop wire around the top and hang them from tree branches for an evening outdoor wedding. In addition, mason jars can make charming flower vases (think short-cut wildflowers) and rustic drinking glasses (lemonade anyone?). You can also fill them with baked goods for your guests to take home. The possibilities are endless. I mean, look at the adorable mason jar save-the-date in the inspiration board!

* serve drinks from oversized wooden crates or steel wash tubs (if you choose wood, make sure to put down a waterproof lining to prevent leaking) A smaller version could also be cute to hold programs or favors.

a question about place cards

My friend just wrote with the follow inquiry regarding her place cards:

"I don't want to go to the expense of having something calligraphed, and the standard folded cards feel kind of formal for the reception I think we'll wind up having. I thought for a while about having the cards somehow attached to tree branches, but I don't want to make it hard for people to actually pick up their cards either. Have you seen anything sort of casual and/or sort of plant-themed that you might recommend for a project?"

Here are my thoughts:

I adore #1 because all you would need to do is buy a stamp set of the alphabet (like this one for $15) and stamp directly onto leaves you have collected outside. The rest of the options don't necessarily need a calligrapher, just someone with nice handwriting. It is difficult to write on the thin, flaky surface so you might need to collect extras incase you make a mistake.

#4 is also nice if you have darker colored leaves. This white gel for pen @ $3.25 should work nicely.
*just make sure all your leaves are clean and dry before starting.

A wood element could also work, but you need to have access to nature & a hand saw (something I could not pull off in the city). If you did, you could use the same stamp set from above for the names. #2 is from Etsy (here) and PS. there are SO many of these on for sale if you would rather purchase them, see here. Another idea that could work is to buy some woodgrain embossed paper (see credit 3) and simply cut & fold the cards yourself. This is a good way to make the standard folded cards a little more special (and fit with the nature theme). Just make sure you don't buy real wood veneer, as it could crack when you fold it.

I know that candy buffets are all the rage, but what about a ...

1). Set out extra large bowls of kettle corn and air popped plain corn

2). Create a topping bar (just set out little bowls and tiny spoons like these)

topping option ideas:

-cinnamon and sugar blend
-grated white cheddar
-crushed, dried chipotle or chili pepper
-slivered almonds
-coco powder
-ranch powder
-caramel and sea salt
-ginger powder and sesame seeds
-lemon zest
-crushed pecans
-dried cranberries
-hot chocolate for drizzling

*additional flavor recipes

OR, you can premix flavors and separate them into different jars (just add little metal scoops)

3). Set out packaging so that guests can take home a treat!
(these would look so cute with handmade labels or screen-printed with your wedding motif)

Here is some advice I picked up while researching green weddings:

*buy in season: this will help save money!!

*buy local: this will also save money (no shipping costs) and most farmer's markets offer fresh flowers

*buy organic

*buy fair trade

*use potted flowers to make the space beautiful: continue enjoying them after the big day (plant them in your yard or give them to friends and family as favors

*make paper flowers: they last forever! (i love these links from martha and others...)
